Decent sound but a few issues...I received this soundbar over Christmas, which was selected for the Dolby Atmos feature and the fact it is an LG, which will pair nicely with my new LG TV. My old soundbar was having trouble talking to the LG, but so far, the SL8Y is not having those same issues.
Set-up of the soundbar is pretty straight forward. The enclosed documentation and manual are pretty lackluster, and I had to go online and download the main manual to decode all of the settings available on the soundbar. That isn’t ideal for a soundbar that costs almost $800. The soundbar connects to the TV via an HDMI or optical cable, and the ARC connection seems to work seamlessly with my LG TV. I’ve not experienced any connectivity issues and the soundbar powers on when the TV is turned on. The subwoofer is wireless but does need to be somewhat close to the TV to function properly. That said, mine is at the back of my family room about 20 feet away and it seems to work fine.
I also purchased the rear surround speakers. They say they are wireless, but the receiver module is wireless and the speakers are hardwired into that module. I found the length of speaker wire to be lacking for a larger room, especially when you need extra wire to run along walls and hide from view. It uses standard speaker wire, which is available online at Amazon or other retailers.
The main reason I purchased the soundbar is for the Dolby Atmos function and the fact it was an LG product. I’ve found that when you are closer to the soundbar, you can hear the top speakers as they try to fill the soundstage with ambient environment sounds from an Atmos-encoded movie. The further back from the soundbar you are, you lose much of that sound, and the sound seems to come from the main front-firing speakers. I’ve tried to tweak the settings, but nothing seems to improve the Dolby Atmos output (LG needs to allow you to control the volume of those top speakers). I was using Avengers Endgame with Atmos sound as my test subject. This brings up the other shortfalls of the system. The center channel seems GREATLY underpowered compared to the front left and right speakers. I’ve got it turned up to the max, and you still lose some dialogue in various scenes. LG would do well to put in a stronger center speaker with more power. Since 99% of your movie is dialogue, the center channel speaker is arguably the most important in the soundbar.
We upgraded from a VIZIO soundbar with surround sound, and we are impressed overall with the quality of the sound of the LG SL8Y. It is definitely an upgrade from the VIZIO. The bass speaker is fantastic, and everything seems to work seamlessly. Movie mode makes everything sound better, but that mode is disabled when Atmos content is received. The rear speakers are large enough to produce some great sound, but they are small enough to blend into any room easily. One other thing we don’t like is the fact there is a lighted display on the front of the soundbar that is always on. It does dim but is distracting since it is a light right below your TV. LG should add a feature where it shuts off once you have your settings complete. When companies such as LG design and build these items, do they talk to real users who can give them feedback before the final product is released? Getting rid of the distracting lighted readout would have been one of my first recommendations.
The main disappointments are the center channel speaker, lack of adjustments to the top-firing Atmos speakers, the constant lighted display, and the lackluster Atmos sound. I’ve only had the soundbar for a week and will be testing other Atmos movies. If I’m not super impressed, it will probably be returned and I’ll check out another brand’s soundbar system with Atmos to see if there is any improvement. I ignored the various top-ten soundbar lists when purchasing the LG, but I’ll probably turn my attention to those lists and check out what the competitors sound like.
Overall, I give this a solid 7.5 out of 10. The sound is great as a normal soundbar, but so far, the Atmos sound is a bit lackluster. For the money, I think there are better options, which is disappointing as I truly wanted to love this soundbar.

Could hdmi 2.0 get the "earc" function via firmware upgrade? Does this support Dolby Vision?
Asked by: LA1401089
LG has not made any announcements about the LG SL8Y 3.1.2 Channel 440W Sound Bar w/ Meridian Technology & Dolby Atmos receiving a firmware upgrade that will add support for eARC. The Soundbar does not support Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision is a video signal and the Soundbar does not process video. It does support 4K Pass-through which is a feature that allows a video source to pass unaffected through the receiver to a 4K TV without any processing so it will allow a video signal carrying Dolby Vision dynamic metadata to pass through...^IFV

Can the subwoofer be laid flat (on a wood floor) and placed under the couch? If so, would there be any degradation to the sound quality?
Asked by: Melchizedek
Subwoofers are omnidirectional so in most cases, their placement in a room is not an issue unless you have furniture or other objects that are blocking them and the acoustical properties of your room may also affect them. Placing a Subwoofer under a couch is an unconventional placement for a Subwoofer and not something that is tested for so there is no way to predict how the sound would be affected...^IFV
